a single whole, and the tools that would make this possible would
fit in your pocket. And in 1990, MIT graduate and one of the creators of the TCP/IP protocol, John Romkey, came up with the world's first "Internet thing" - he connected his toaster to the network
. But the term "Internet
of Things" appeared only 9 years later and was proposed by Kevin
Ashton.

Also in 1990, the Auto-ID Center was created
, dealing with radio-frequency identification (RFID) and sensor
technologies, which contributed to the spread of the IoT concept. The france mobile phone numbers database moment of transition from the "Internet of People" to the "Internet
of Things" - when the number of objects connected to the network exceeded
the population of the planet - came in 2008-2009.

It was then, as
a result of the rapid spread of smartphones and tablet computers,
that the number of connected devices grew to 12.5 billion, while the population
of the Earth was 6.8 billion people. Thus, for the first time in history, there was more than one connected device per
person (1.84 per capita).

A new report from ITU and networking giant
Cisco identifies the Internet of Things (IoT) as
a major global development opportunity that has the potential to improve the lives
of millions of people and significantly accelerate progress towards the UN
Sustainable Development Goals. The report, Harnessing
the Internet of Things for Global Development, was launched at
the annual meeting of the Pacific Telecommunication Council.

By 2020, as many as 25 billion networked devices are projected to be connected, with IoT market revenues expected to grow to US$1.7 trillion by 2019, making the Internet the largest device market globally.

Another key
technology for the IoT and one that emerged in the telecom industry is machine-to-machine interaction — M2M
(Machine-To-Machine). Microsoft points out that the terms M2M and IoT
are periodically used in the same context. The corporation itself believes that
M2M technology is the “glue” of the IoT. Back in the early 2000s, the “big three” began
to offer offers in this area for corporate users.
Here, Russia has repeated the global trend — the M2M market is dominated by operators:
American AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, European Telenor, Vodafone, Telstra
and Chinese China Mobile and China Unicom.
