The driving force of the Spanish economy is SMEs and the self-employed . They make up 99% of the workforce in our country. However, the current reality shows that the presence of technology in companies is still too scarce for an era in which digital transformation is as important as competitiveness.
Why is digitalization important for companies?
The coronavirus crisis has widened the digital divide between the most technologically innovative companies and those that remain stuck in an analogue model. The lockdown in March 2020 and the subsequent economic standstill accelerated the digital transformation of many companies, but not all of those that were necessary.
To be exact, and according to the report 'The facebook data digitalisation of the economy 2021', the limited use that Spanish companies make of technology could affect their competitive position in the short term and, therefore, economic growth and their capacity to generate employment in the medium term.
What level of digital transformation are we at?
Along the same lines, the Digital Economy and Society Index , which calculates the level of digitalisation of European companies , places Spain in 16th position out of 27. However, the same indicator supports the digitalisation of public services in our country, placing Spain in ninth place in this area.
To give us a more accurate idea of the digitalisation of Spanish companies, the same European report indicates that 62% of SMEs have at least a basic level of digital intensity and 24% already sell over the Internet. However, only 7% of them make sales outside our borders , which harms Spanish competitiveness in the international market.
Grants for the digitalisation of SMEs
As expected and with the aim of promoting the digital transformation of our business fabric, the Executive has launched a package of aid, courses and training aimed especially at modernizing the work dynamics of Spanish SMEs .
Known as the Business Kit and budgeted within the framework of European funds, the administration has designed an aid program valued at more than 3,000 million euros. Interested companies can request a digital voucher in which a certain amount of money will be loaded to invest in digital solutions and tools present in the market.
