We've talked about sync licensing and royalties a number of times on this blog. What we haven't talked about is micro-syncing. In this post, we're going to dive deeper into what it is and why it's important. Here's everything you need to know.

What Are Micro Sync Licenses?
Let’s break it down…
Whenever a song appears in a TV show, movie, commercial, etc., there is talk of “sync.” Now, sync and micro-sync are basically the same thing, but with one important detail.

Scale.

Sync Licensing vs. MicroSync
Just as an artist collects licensing fees and royalties for a spot on a TV show or movie, he or she is also owed “micro-sync” fees and royalties for smaller shows.

Some examples of the most common types of micro-sync licenses are:

User generated content e.g. Youtube
Posts on social new zealand email list networks
Internal company videos
Video presentations at events or conferences
Professional wedding videos
Podcasts

Fitness class videos
Lives on Twitch
Apps
Mobile games
Typically, sync licenses are negotiated between the production company and the content owners for thousands of dollars per license. However, this process can be time-consuming and requires a lot of paperwork.

On the other hand, micro-sync licenses are granted on a much smaller scale, so the business model is quite different. Content owners looking to get into micro-sync need to operate in a marketplace that facilitates quick and easy licensing, so they can get a high volume of small placements. This adds up.
