Airbus has unveiled a two-meter-long prototype of its Maveric (Model Aircraft for Validation and Experimentation of Robust Innovative Controls) aircraft at the Singapore Air Show. The Maveric looks like a spaceship.
This is an experimental remote-controlled model. With its help, Airbus is testing the aerodynamics and capabilities of a new aircraft design that combines the passenger cabin, wing and fuel compartments. Two Maveric engines are located above the "flying wing".
The prototype is being developed with the same precision and peru number data undergoes the same tests as conventional aircraft, Airbus says .
According to Airbus representatives, such a design will help reduce fuel consumption by 20% compared to existing narrow-body aircraft, will allow for experimentation with engine types, and will reduce noise in the aircraft.
The commercial version of the aircraft with a mixed wing will improve the quality of passenger service: for example, legroom and aisles between seats will increase.
Blended wing aircraft have several drawbacks that need to be addressed, including difficulty in controlling, as well as the amount of passenger motion during turns due to the seats being positioned further from the center.
Another unresolved question is whether there will be windows in the cabin or whether Airbus will place video screens instead to give passengers a sense of the plane's movement.
Maveric development began in 2017, with the first tests taking place in June 2019 in France — they will continue in the second half of 2020.
Airbus has not given a specific date for the start of operations of the blended wing aircraft. The company is currently developing the cabin and working on integrating the aircraft into airports.
