Hurricane Sandy, which raged across the US East Coast last week, has paralysed mobile internet in large parts of the country. Work is underway to rebuild these networks with all its might. Some providers, such as Comcast, have opened their WiFi network, which is normally only available to customers, to all citizens.Everyone is now looking at big mobile operators to restore mobile internet, but actually we wouldn't need these parties if everyone was willing to share a little bit. How does that work?
Most smartphones have had the ability to become a 'personal hotspot' for some time now, this is also called 'tethering': they become a transmitter and receiver. In this way, every smartphone can connect to multiple other devices, such as a laptop, a tablet, a printer, a camera or another smartphone, and share its internet connection with them. Every device that has a wireless internet option, such as WiFi or Bluetooth, can be connected to the internet via a smartphone.

Not all devices need to have a direct internet connection themselves.
