Interview with Borja Garzón What does educational innovation mean to you?

We have been wanting to chat with Borja Garzón for a while now. We have been following his career for years and attending his talks at conferences such as Trainers for the Future or Expoelearning.

Expoelearning has awarded him the prize for Best Innovation in Education, and in its next edition Borja will participate in the round table "The ethics of AI applied to higher education and corporate training" so this is the ideal time to address with him topics such as the incipient use of artificial intelligence and digital trends applicable to the training sector.

Educational innovation is at the heart of transformative learning. It is not just about incorporating the latest technology, but about rethinking how we teach, learn, and connect with knowledge.

Imagine a path where each step forward is based on better understanding our students, adapting methods and tools to make learning more relevant, accessible, and motivating. If what we hope is to land on a concept or a trend of innovation in education, I would undoubtedly say that it is the personalization of learning (because each person learns in a different way, starts from a different point and has different needs as well as different objectives) and attention to diversity, innovation must be inclusive by nature.

What do we mean by EdTech teaching?
EdTech, or educational technology, is the bridge that connects pedagogical methodologies with the infinite possibilities of technology . It is a way to make learning more interactive, personalized, and tailored to the needs and pace of each student.

Let's think of it as enriching our educational arsenal with tools that open up new dimensions to explore and discover. At the same time that technology helps us to universalize access to education (for multiple benefits), it can also be a barrier and a gap of inequality, which is why I understand educational technology as a means and not an end in which to do more with less, automate bureaucratic tasks, use tools with a high impact on the student's emotions and increase engagement with the course and content, interactive dynamics and so on. In addition, it must be accompanied, facilitated and with a plan behind it.

At the same time, it helps us to be in the digital channels where we find ourselves in our daily lives and to make meaningful learning embedded and adapted to people's daily lives. All of this with a user experience that does not cause pain for the educational community, but rather, on the contrary, it involves the dissolution of barriers and helps us learn when and where we need it.



Is it compatible to continue applying methods such as Design Thinking in the current environment of using technological tools?
Absolutely, it is not that they are compatible, but that they are necessary. Design Thinking and technology are natural allies. This method invites us to be empathetic with our students, to define their needs, devise creative solutions, prototype, and then test. Technology offers the tools to make this process more dynamic and accessible, allowing us to iterate and adapt our educational solutions with agility. Although the fruit of the innovation of a design thinking process should not be by nature a digital product or service, far from it.
