This week, Twitter launched its new Twitter Alerts service , which allows users to subscribe to alerts issued by NGOs and government agencies during emergencies , natural disasters, or in circumstances where traditional means of communication are unavailable. Messages are sent directly to subscribers' mobile phones via SMS and push notifications, and are also posted to their timeline with a dedicated design and the hashtag #alert.
At the moment, only about 100 NGOs and institutions in the US, Japan, and South Korea are able to offer this alert service , although Twitter assures that it will expand it to more institutions and more countries.
Twitter thus consolidates its role as a channel for raising awareness country email list and disseminating information on emergencies and solidarity campaigns. This role is also very present in Spain, one of the countries where social organizations receive the most support through this social network. For example: Greenpeace Spain has more than 447,800 followers, compared to Greenpeace UK's 69,375, Greenpeace France's 173,000, and Greenpeace USA's 87,800.
