Very few could have predicted that 4G would bring us services like Uber, GrubHub, or Apple Pay. Some are banking on immersive technologies like AR and VR, while others are banking on autonomous driving, drones, and so on. 5G will work on many different networks, so there will be list of us phone data work cases that were not possible before. For example, mmWave 5G could be used to roll out a home-wide network, known as FWA or fixed wireless access. Verizon is already doing this with Samsung and its 5G network, and can now deliver speeds of up to 600 Mbps without having to install fiber into homes. That means faster speeds in the home, at a lower cost than before—a network that’s affordable for everyone.
Another business case that hasn’t been possible before is the ability to fully automate drones for surveying and inspection. Currently, companies like DroneInch are working with industries to enable semi-automated drones to inspect cell towers and oil and gas infrastructure at a lower cost and without the risk of human intervention. 5G will enable higher image quality, instantaneous streaming of images, and precise real-time control through its lower latency and network segmentation.
