If you've been following our blog for a while, you already know: every month, experts from the Propague Institute , together with Stone's Economic Research team, compile retail data into a single report, showing the growth and declines over the period.
In today's post, we've brought you the main insights from the October report so you can prepare and adapt your business in the best way possible, according to the numbers in your segment and state. Check it out!
Segment analysis
In the annual comparison, retail sales volume fell by 2.8% in October compared to the same period last year. This drop comes after the first increase of the year in September, with growth of 1.9%. The October result shows a challenging outlook for the end of 2023. Now, according to the report, there is no longer so much talk of expectations of improvement, as in previous months, but rather a cautious assessment of stability.
Stone Varejo also presents, separately, 6 segments. In October, all of them suffered a reduction in sales volume, according to the list released by Propague:
Pharmaceuticals: the sector recorded a 1.6% drop in the finland mobile phone number annual comparison and 2.1% in the monthly comparison. This result is in line with the upward trend that the sector has shown throughout most of the year, but does not change its position as one of the best-performing sectors during the period analyzed.
Construction materials: the sector followed a similar trend, with a 0.4% drop and a 0.8% increase in the annual and monthly comparisons, respectively. As a result, the segment now shows a more evident trend of improvement, entering the third consecutive month with a reduction in the drop rates - 1.9% in August and 1.2% in September. This reinforces the resilience of the sector and demonstrates a consistently better performance than other sectors throughout the year.
Furniture and home appliances: the sector fell by 0.6% and rose by 0.4% in the annual and monthly comparisons, respectively. Despite the fall, the result indicates stability in the segment, due to the annual increase of 3.3% in September, which maintains a positive outlook for the end of the year.
Food, beverages and tobacco products : the sector showed an annual drop of 6.7% in October, after registering a 0% change in September. In the monthly comparison, the drop was 5.9%, which reverses the outlook for improvement highlighted in the previous month.
Fabrics, clothing and footwear: the sector saw a 6% drop in the annual comparison and 5.1% in the monthly comparison, which reveals the segment's difficulty in returning to the level recorded in the previous year and recovering the sales volume that was lost .
Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery: the sector recorded an annual drop of 9.1%. In the next topic, we will take a closer look at this result.
According to the report, as the data reveals, the scenario is one of decline in the annual comparison in all segments analyzed. Despite this, the Furniture and Home Appliances and Construction Material sectors, despite showing a decline in the annual comparison, had growth results in the monthly comparison of 0.4% and 0.8%, respectively.
According to Propague, "The sector analysis follows the same panorama, with a drop in the annual comparison in all six segments monitored, although some managed to show growth in the seasonally adjusted monthly comparison. This result reinforces the diagnosis of stability and the need to monitor the results for more months."
What was the worst segment of the period?
Of all the sectors analyzed, the one with the worst performance was Books, Newspapers, Magazines and Stationery. The segment saw a 9.1% drop in sales volume in the annual comparison, continuing a trend already recorded in previous months. For the third consecutive month, the sector had the worst performance among the segments analyzed. In the monthly comparison, the sector saw a 1.4% decline. Given this scenario, the report recommends paying attention to this sector.
Analysis of states
Continuing the analysis of the numbers, we will now look at the retail performance by Brazilian state. This will give you an overview of your region and help you prepare your store according to the period's performance.
If in September, nine states showed growth, October saw a worsening, with only four states showing growth in sales volume.
This is the list of states that experienced growth during the period:
2.9% for Pará
2.8% for Tocantins
1.2% for Mato Grosso do Sul
0.5% for Piauí
Once again, the positive highlight is the North, with 2 of the 4 states having a positive result in this edition.
On the other hand, most states recorded a decline in retail sales. Espírito Santo, which had been on a growth trajectory, ended up seeing a drop in sales volume as well.
Amapá had the worst drop in sales volume in October, continuing the trend observed in recent months: this is the second consecutive month in which the state recorded the largest drop. The South and Southeast regions also had a negative performance: no state showed growth.
