Bitcoin blackout? – After a phenomenal rise in the first part of 2021, the value of Bitcoin has now fallen below $30,000 for the first time since January. The cause of this plunge? Elon Musk, again, but also the Chinese government , which intends to drive the number one cryptocurrency out of its territory. China is cutting off the electricity supply to companies that mine Bitcoin , thus causing an exodus and a massive sale of cryptocurrencies . China has thus seen 90% of its Bitcoin mining capacity disappear in just a few days. But this does not mean that Beijing is radically opposed to cryptocurrencies: the aim is to exclude currencies that cannot be controlled .
Channel 4 privatisation – The UK has this week revived the idea of privatising Channel 4 , which has been a recurring theme since the 1980s. Despite a record year in terms of audiences and an operating surplus of £71 million, the channel could be sold as part of a reorganisation of the British television landscape in the face of the shift towards SVOD . The decision has not yet been made, but Channel 4 figures such as Dorothy Byrne are opposed and warn of the danger of this privatisation for the diversity of British television programmes.
DMA & DSA – This week, discussions between GAFA and the EU on the DMA (Digital Market Act) and the DSA (Digital Service Act) are resuming in earnest. These two texts make up the EU's offensive against GAFA's anti-competitive practices but are received differently by the platforms. While the DSA would prevent European countries from establishing stricter regulations at the national level , the DMA seriously threatens GAFA's quasi-monopolistic positions. While Tim Cook criticizes the DSA text which “would threaten the security of the iPhone” , Facebook denounces an overly penalizing text which “will not help Europe become more competitive” and is preparing its response . These directives will be applied directly after the vote of the European Parliament but it is impossible to predict how long the negotiations will last; especially since some countries are calling for even stricter regulation .
