Engagement: Do you know why you do what you do?

Post by monira444 »

A few days ago I read the book “Why? How to Motivate People and Teams to Act” by Simon Sinek, which stated the following: when you are motivated by why, success simply happens. Engagement with a “why”?! At the time I thought it was nonsense, but today the phrase made sense.

Summarizing the context of the book

In his book, Simon Sinek says that after studying highly influential leaders around the world, he observed that they all communicate in exactly the same way. And it all revolves around the “Why.”

He also highlights that large companies do not hire qualified people and motivate them, on the contrary, they hire people who are already motivated and inspire them.

On the other hand, when these motivated people costa rica whatsapp data are directed to do something that they don't believe in and that doesn't make sense to them, they tend to leave their jobs to look for something that involves them.

Summarizing my context

I was assigned to create a material with content on strategic planning, which we will share soon, but anyway, so far so good, so my leader tasked me with coming up with possible content so we could discuss what would go into this material.

This was a challenge that would certainly have lifted my spirits. But it didn't, at least not right away, and I'll explain why.

At first I was focused on what to do and how to do it. So I saw the challenge as something mechanical that would be just another piece of content.

But what does all this have to do with engagement?

This little word “because” is in fact the “icing on the cake” of any project, and I was able to see this when my leader asked me to do the PAS (Agile Meaning Planning) for this material.

She asked me right away, why should we create this content? And then came other questions, such as:

Why will people be interested in this content?
Why should people read this content, what is the purpose of doing so?
Why did we choose this audience?
Why are we going to continue with this topic?
You know that phrase “my eyes lit up”, that must have happened the moment I started answering the questions.

So I ask you, can you understand the influence that these whys had on me? I can say that answering these questions was liberating, it moves away from the line of reasoning: “what to write?” To:

Why am I going to write?
Who will I serve?
Where am I going with this?
Who will I contribute to?
By getting the answers to the whys, the construction of the content began to make more sense, and with that, ideas regarding the content to be written began to emerge spontaneously.

Engagement starts with “why”!

As long as an employee is clear about the reason for carrying out their tasks and their contribution to the company and society, they will feel engaged and will spare no effort or energy to carry out their tasks.

As results emerge, productivity increases and professionals become more motivated to find a vision in the organization that is aligned with their principles.
