Streaming platforms are snapping up hit series from the 1990s and 2000s for millions, if not billions, of dollars. While these series have certainly captured our imagination, there is still reason to wonder whether nostalgia alone is a viable business model. Analysis.

The phenomenon goes beyond Netflix. It is all the over-the-top (OTT) television services that are currently snapping up old series:

Peacock (NBCUniversal) has acquired The Office from Netflix for $500 million over 5 years.
HBO Max (WarnerMedia) snapped up Friends for $425 million over 5 years, and reportedly paid over $1 billion to get exclusive rights to The Big Bang Theory .
