How can I hire an intern?
Companies and self-employed workers may have interns in certain circumstances, but they must always meet a series of requirements.
Collaboration agreement
This part requires signing a collaboration agreement with a university or educational centre. This contract will establish the conditions of the student's training and the key details of the same: start and end dates, daily working hours or tasks to be performed. It is usual for the university to be in charge of carrying out the corresponding procedures. In addition, according to Royal Decree 592/2014, of July 11 (which regulates external academic internships for university students), these internships will have a duration of no more than 50% of the academic year.
Establishing the working day
Typically, the intern is present at the company for 4 to 5 hours a day. The duration of their stay is usually short, with periods of3 to6 months. However, they can sometimes be longer, as long as they fit into the university's training programme.
Registration in social security
The intern will share the same staff as other workers, so he or she must be registered with Social Security, in order to improve the intern's protection in the event of an accident or illness. This aspect has been mandatory since 2019 and is carried out independently of whether the intern will carry out the internship in a paid manner or not. The monthly cost of this registration is usually around 40 euros.
It should be noted that interns cannot be dismissed, as they are not employees per se and are not governed by the Workers' Statute . However, although they cannot be dismissed, the agreement can be suspended when the time comes. Furthermore, once it has ended abruptly due to various circumstances (bad attitude, unjustified absences, etc.), their internship will not be considered to have been successfully completed.
