When it comes to future trends, Annelies Termeer says that augmented reality is emerging as a particularly promising field: “Today, all mobile phones have this capability, but I haven’t really seen any interesting use cases in the media. AR is only used for gaming or in the commercial context. This is an opportunity that I see.”

So the lab is developing “Dustin,” an interactive smartphone story that uses AR elements. “You could think of AR as a new public space, but now it’s filled with Pokémon and advertising. I think there’s also a role for public broadcasters, who could create more high-quality, informative AR content. ”
