The large ensemble, for a broader and more situated vision of social housing
The definition of "large complexes" (in particular the number of housing units and facilities, the type of governance) fluctuates with the historical, political, geographical and social context of each construction. Social differences between individuals would not be so much based on individual qualities as on the types of supports surrounding the individual. Supports can be material, social or relational, symbolic, identity-based, but also spatial [6] . Applied to aging, the notion helps explain the differential nature of experiences. Indeed, far from being fixed, supports vary with the person's past experience (social class, professional activity, health) and the characteristics of the inhabited environment (atmospheres, access to urban amenities, etc.). In the dynamic process of aging, the use of supports is considered to be evolving. Thus, applied to the housing of the elderly, these supports can take the form of people and/or spaces that interact at different spatial scales – from housing to neighborhood – and benefit one or more residents depending on whether they are inside or outside the housing.
