Usually, projects track completed registrations in a standard way, where users complete registration filling in default fields (First Name, Last Name, Email, Password and others). It is tracked in 2 most popular ways:

Set up a specific event for Registration Form Submission (or successful ‘Finish Registration’ button click) with Google Tag Manager and send it to Google Analytics
Set up Goal in Google Analytics based on Destination URL (if a product has an unique URL for completed registration)
But there are a lot of cases when:

Products doesn’t have specific final URLs for completed registration (no matter if it is the standard way or social sign up actions)
The Sign Up process with Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Microsoft or other services is totally different from the Standard Registration, and GTM isn’t able to track it as a Registration Form Submission event

Here I will explain how to set up sign in or sign up events tracking in Google Analytics, using Google Tag Manager and DataLayer. Note please, that this way requires help from the project’s IT team, but it is quite easy. No rocket science :)

Let’s go!

The whole implementation process consists of 4 parts:

Set up Variables in GTM (it takes ≈10 min)
Set up Tags in GTM using created Variables (it takes ≈10 min)
Add DataLayer code from the provided template below & Measurement Protocol Event Tracking (it is individual, but in our case it took approximately 10 hours)
